2016-02-18 19.33.59Yep, some days things just glow.

(Speaking of glowing; I have known the guys who own and founded Kuhl clothing since they were making fleece hats in the mid 80’s up in the LCC. Now they are in the global icon business! Take a look; )

12. February 2016 · Comments Off on Snoquet 3.0; 2016 World Championships. · Categories: Real mtn life, Snoquet

Monday 2/8/2016 and Snoquet is getting ready to go global with the first ever World Championships! Well, that is what we, the same 3 guys who play every week, deemed it. The long term forecast was looking warm and grim for court survival so the last night of play had to be big! It went down this way; $10 buy in and the winner of each game took $4 out of the pot. The 7th game would be played for the remaining $6 so cash monies were on the line!

As usual it was another perfect winter evening in the 2325. An immaculate course was quickly refreezing into a pool table like surface.
2016-02-08 06.26.33

The Man of the House took the extra step of lining the course with official Hoka One One sponsor flags which usually adorn his Speed Goat 50k race course. A nice touch for the main event.
2016-02-08 06.28.59

“Boots” Johnson started off play with a dismal, wicket blocker of a shot but this then allowed the rest of us to easily take a mallet head and advance onto the court.

2016-02-08 06.34.47

Since this was the Worlds a wicket cam was set up for live action shots though the battery quickly died due to some poor planning by “Boots”. There was also a Ice Castle theme to some of the court features. Another nice touch for the big game.

2016-02-08 06.51.31 Check the live action right here; https://vimeo.com/155150364

As luck would have it going into the 7th and penultimate game, all of us had won 2 games and had $8 of our $10 in pocket so all the marbles were on the line for game 7! As he is known to do, the Man of the House came from behind for a fairly dramatic win taking the $6 prize purse and the Overall 2016 World Title which he now keeps until next season!

2016-02-08 06.51.41In our push to turn Snoquet into a global thing, we now have our very own hashtag; #snoquet and are actively looking for sponsors so we can hang out in the backyard all winter drink beer and play snoquet with no jobs to get in the way of honing on snow skills. Actually the Man of the House already has this lifestyle due to being a professional mtn runner and coach but I(your humble Editor) and Boots are still cube slaves and looking to get in the lifestyle so we are ready to sell out asap! (Natty Lite are you listening?!)

(If I may be so bold, gentle reader, you can help Boots and your cubicle bound Editor on our way to going pro by clicking the links below and buying something! Go ahead and give it a little clicksee……)

I often think what my life would have become had a 11 year old Editor not been exposed to skiing through Mt Pleasant‘s after school ski program. Mt. P as it has been long known to locals, is located on rt86 just outside of Edinboro, Pennsylvania and I was lucky enough to only live 5 miles up the road from it’s 340 vertical foot access t-bar. On weekends it was not uncommon for my brothers and I to ski all day and into the night session on Saturdays and 9a-5p on Sundays.  On a recent trip back to the motherland I stopped by Mt. P just to see what was going on and the place is looking better than ever;

Attention to detail at the new Mt. P is through the roof! Check out the upcycling of the old rental skis into cool light fixtures. The boardwalk is also a great addition and eliminates muddy spring walks up and down the driveway.

Definitely the most radical change is the one season old Highlander chairlift! Huge upgrade compared to the old T-bar!(though it was always fun popping airs off the t-bar ruts)
2016-01-09 22.37.54

Behind every home mountain are the people making it happen! Despite facing harder odds than farming, Doug and Laura Sinsebaugh are fully committed to running Mt P well into the future. It is also pretty cool to that when they hand out a business card it only has phone numbers not a email address where your email might never be opened. Hey look; on the computer is the PPPC!
2016-01-09 22.35.19

A pair of the iconic Olin Mark 4’s(the had to have ski when I was coming up) adorn the entry into the rental shop.

2016-01-09 22.16.44

This is a big upgrade; Family ski lockers! They are available on a seasonal/rental basis.

2016-01-09 22.19.05

Still the same killer view from the loft but now you get WIFI with the price of a lift ticket!

2016-01-09 22.19.50

Mt P in all it’s snow covered glory! Fire up the Highlander boys!

20160210_174137(Thanks to local Boro Realtor and regular Mt. P. shredder Cory Barbato for the pic as it was not yet snow covered when I was home.)

Mt Pleasant; affordable family focused skiing just minutes from Edinboro, Pa.! Stop in, get your shred on, and say hello to the Sinsebaughs!

09. February 2016 · Comments Off on Mtn. Dell; World Class Nordic minutes from the SLC! · Categories: Blatant Utah tourism propaganda, Here comes the fuck weather!, Real mtn life, Skate Ski, Utah Tourism

Mountain Dell Nordic; World Class Nordic Skiing less than 10 minutes up Parley’s Canyon from the Salt Lake valley! Not only is Mountain Dell close to the city it is also very inexpensive and a great option for people looking to get away from the apocalyptic traffic of the Cottonwood Canyons. A season pass for a typical season that averages 90 days a year is only $55 for TUNA Members and $80 otherwise and a day pass is only $7!

The first thing you will see as you head down to the track at Mountain Dell is a volunteer collecting the day pass fee. Below is Eric who happened to be doing his volunteer shift this past weekend. These volunteers pull a couple of weekend shifts a year and get a free pass for their efforts. So when you show up to ski just give up the $7 and don’t hassle the volunteers or offer excuses as to why you don’t have a measly $7!

Once on the track the highway fades away and you are completely surrounded by killer track and equally killer views!
2016-02-05 23.52.29

As soon as the base is sufficient, classic and skate lanes are groomed daily.

2016-02-06 00.01.34

Granduer Peak is always in the background no matter where you are on the track.

2016-02-06 00.01.56-1

More killer views and more perfectly buffed skate lanes! This section below follows a small stream and it is not uncommon to see moose, elk, and mule deer by the water.

Early snow in the Wasatch is never a good thing and we definitely got it this season. That shit turns into Surface hoar and when a little weight drops on top; the curtain comes down. Take a look at a selection of recent avy photo’s shot by Mark White who spends winter as a observer for the Utah Avalance Forecast center;
12642574_771426192962385_7350898252678354607_nMother of god! a 3ft plus crown!

12644907_768480229923648_6716315561268911423_nVery popular Holy Toledo shot which was set off by a local helicopter ski outfit. This one slid as the 15th skier in the group was on it!

12645222_771449836293354_1419166915086967634_nCan you say “Ripped to the fucking ground!”? I knew you could……

12670087_771775036260834_589301449329373085_nNotice how this one covered up existing tracks? Just cause others have skied it doesn’t mean shit.

Wind drift cracks a propagating!

All of the above shots are of man eaters! Back Country skiing is something that must be approached with a lot of respect or you will end up dead.
